Hypnotherapy is simply the use of special techniques that encourage relaxation and inner absorption, which give access to the subconscious mind in order to make beneficial changes. By putting positive suggestions to the subconscious mind, which is the more intuitive part of the brain, we bypass the more critical, conscious part of the brain that is often causing the problem.
Being in hypnosis is simply experiencing a pleasant sensation of inward absorption. Actually, this is something we have all experienced – watching a film, reading a book, staring out of a train window or when driving and finding you have arrived at your destination without remembering how you got there! It is said all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
Contrary to popular films and some stage shows, there is no mystery about being in a trance-like state. You are conscious, in control and can wake up at any time. Although the word hypnosis comes from the word 'to sleep' it is nothing like being asleep. Most people are aware of what is happening and will remember everything.
In fact, most people find the experience of hypnosis to be a very pleasant sensation, leaving them feeling relaxed and happy - like going on holiday but without suffering the inevitable airport queues!
